The Ghost of the Guildhall: The Legend of Sam Mackey?

Updated on: July 9, 2026

For centuries, stories of ghosts have been woven into the fabric of Ireland, and in Derry, few buildings have inspired as many tales as the iconic Guildhall.

Standing proudly on the banks of the River Foyle, the Guildhall has witnessed some of the city’s most significant moments. It has welcomed dignitaries, survived conflict, and stood at the heart of civic life for generations. But according to many who have worked within its walls, it may also have one very familiar resident who never truly left.

His name is said to be Sam Mackey

Who Was Sam Mackey?

Historical records tell us that Sam Mackey was born in 1895 and served during the First World War. It is believed that he later became the superintendent of the Guildhall during the 1920s, 30s or 40s, dedicating much of his life to caring for one of Derry’s most treasured buildings.

While much of his life remains a mystery, his connection to the Guildhall has endured through decades of local stories.

 A Visitor from Another Time?

The account came from a member of the Guildhall staff shortly after she began working there.

One quiet morning, with only two visitors inside the building, the pair explored the Plantation of Ulster Exhibition before returning to reception with an unusual question.

“Do you employ people to dress in period costume and walk around the building?”

Confused, the receptionist explained that no costumed guides were working that day.

The visitors described seeing a man dressed entirely in black, wearing an old-fashioned hat. Rather than looking at the exhibitions, he appeared to be studying the room itself, as though he didn’t recognise what he was seeing.

It was only after hearing the description that the receptionist realised why the visitors had asked.

The exhibition room they had entered would once have been the Council Chamber during Sam Mackey’s lifetime.

If the stories are true, perhaps he wasn’t looking at the displays because, to him, they simply weren’t there.

Concerned that someone may have wandered into a restricted area, staff requested for the room to be checked.  When another member of staff arrived, the mysterious man had disappeared. Yet something unusual remained.

The room had become ice cold, so cold that staff reported being able to see their breath in the air and no explanation was ever found.

Legend or Reality?

Whether you believe in ghosts or prefer a more logical explanation, stories like Sam Mackey’s have become part of the Guildhall’s rich folklore.

Over the years, countless staff, visitors and tour guides have shared similar tales, helping to keep the legend alive for each new generation.

Perhaps it’s simply the atmosphere of a historic building filled with memories.

Or perhaps Sam Mackey is still quietly watching over the Guildhall he once cared for.

We’ll let you decide.
